How to Make Chords Sound Mysterious | 007 Soundtrack Trick!

How to Make Chords Sound Mysterious

007 Soundtrack Trick!

Hey guys, I have a question for you! Do you know how to make chords sound mysterious? No? Well let me help you with that.

Today I want to show you an awesome guitar trick that you can use on any minor chord to make them sound more mysterious, dramatic and dark.

I borrowed this concept from the famous 007 James Bond soundtrack which is one of the most genius, catchy and simple motive ever written. How is it possible that four chromatic notes can be so recognizable?

This simple trick works on any minor triad and can be used for any type of chord inversions.

If you are a complete beginner, you will probably hear words that sound new to you, such as triads, minor 6th, major 6th etc. Even if you don’t understand any of the musical terms in this video I still encourage you to try this lesson.

Music theory is important but not always necessary. If you are a fingerstyle beginner, give priority to your “fingers” and play things that make you happy and motivate you. Come back and analyze these chords when you learn more about music theory.

This is a guitar lesson for any guitar player who want to learn how to change simple chords into something “different”.

I hope you get inspired.

Make Chords Sound Mysterious

Chords are one of the most versatile tool that we have in music.

A chord can express a state of mind, a color, an emotion or a particular situation. We can transform the sound of each chord by changing the basic intervals.

When we play around the perfect 5th of a minor chord, we can make it sound mysterious and dark.

We can break it down into three simple steps:

  1. Play a minor chord.
  2. Find the perfect 5th within the chord.
  3. Raise the 5th half step up, twice. Keep the root and minor 3rd on the same fret.

In the example below notice how the perfect 5th is the only note that changes. The A and C remain the same.
