Technique Lab Program – Module 5/8

Combine Plucking Fingers with Thumb

Hey guys I just uploaded a new lesson for the Technique Lab Program. This is the module 5/8 where I am showing you how to combine plucking fingers with thumb.

In this lesson you will play a bunch of basic chords with a very simple fingerstyle pattern followed by a melody played with the thumb.

This lesson will help you improve finger dexterity, basic chords and musicality. You will also be able to switch between plucking patterns with more accuracy.

About this Lesson

Key: A minor

Technique: Switching between plucking fingers and thumb movement.

Fingerstyle pattern: There are two different plucking patterns:

  • Plucking Pattern 1 – P a m i, on the basic chords (thumb, ring, middle and index)
  • Plucking Pattern 2 – P i, on melody (Thumb and index).

Sections: Eight bars with one section only.

How to Practice: We can break the exercise down in two parts. Learn the chords with the plucking pattern 1 then add the melody with the plucking pattern 2.

Good luck with this super exercise guys!

More coming soon.

How to Pluck the Strings Smoothly in Three Steps

Hey guys, welcome to another fingerstyle lesson!

Today I am going to show you how to pluck the strings smoothly in three steps.

I am actually answering a question from one of my Patrons. Pam asked me why her plucking sounds more “staccato” (detached) than mine.

She’s also pointed out few things about the way I position my fingers so I thought it would be nice to make a lesson to help not only Pam but as many guitar players as possible. Patreon Fingerstyle Guitar Lesson

In this lesson I am going to talk to you about the three most important aspects of fingerstyle plucking and I am going to share with you few tools that I use so that you should be able to learn how to pluck the strings smoothly.

  1. How to effectively pluck the strings and how to finally get rid of the awful staccato/detached plucking.
  2. The difference between plucking chords and plucking a melody and how to position the plucking hand based on what you are playing.
  3. How to achieve a beautiful tone and a precise plucking technique with the “sweet plucking spot” and the “45 degree angle rule”.

This is not just a guitar lesson for beginners.

If you have been playing for a while and you feel you are stuck in a guitar rot chances are that you are probably plucking the strings incorrectly.

I hope this video answer your questions.

Beautiful Solo in B minor (Broken Down in 5 Melodies) with Backing Track!

Beautiful Solo in B minor (Broken Down in 5 melodies)

with Backing Track!

Hey guys, I hope you had a fantastic weekend. New week new guitar lessons! Today I am going to show you this beautiful guitar solo in B minor, broken down in 5 melodies with backing track available.

As you know, I love playing solos over backing track (especially in minor key) so I am super excited to show you the five melodies I wrote today.

This guitar solo in B minor is extremely melodic and it should help you improve your musicality, fretboard knowledge and technique.

I am playing each melody within a specific box so that it’s easy for you to visualize the scale pattern and the melody.

There are three things you should follow if you really want to make the most out of this lesson:

  1. Learn how to play the melodies using the same fingering shown on the video. By doing that you will be able to improve your left hand finger stretch.
  2. Use the backing track only after you learn the melody. I suggest you start with the backing track with the metronome before moving on to the original backing track. I am not ashamed to say that I have recorder the solo with the backing track with the metronome!
  3. At some point, write your own melodies and improvise on the backing track freely.

The tab is available on my Patreon page as well as the tab.

Good luck with this beautiful guitar solo in B minor.

Major Chord that Sounds Like a Minor. Simple Chords on Guitar

Hey guys welcome to another fingerstyle guitar lesson. Today I want to show you how to play a major chord that sounds like a minor. Don’t worry, we will stick to simple chords! A triad is the most basic chord we have in music. If you have been playing for few months (or even weeks) chances are you are using triads. Basic chords such as C major, A minor etc are actually triads. A triad is a bunch of notes that make up a chord. When you play a C major chord you are playing the root note C, the major 3rd E and the perfect 5th G. A lot of guitar players (especially beginners) don’t know that so they end up playing always the same chords. Once you learn how to build chords, you will also be able to learn how to create ones, change and improve the ones you already know and also come up with new possibilities. In this lesson I am going to show you how to play E minor 7 and A major chord. We will break down the E minor 7 so that we can visualize it as a Major triad (chord) of G which will have the same shape as the A major chord. I know, it doesn’t make much sense in words so I will do my best to explain this concept on video. I hope you enjoy this lesson guys.

The Chord Progression

The Chord Progression for this simple chords lesson is Em7 and A. The Em7 is a very basic chord with the extended 7th. The notes that make up this chord are E – G – B – D. The awesome thing about Min7 chords is the fact that we consider them as Major triads with a different bass note.
The E minor 7 chord notes are E G B D. If we get rid of the first note E we’ll have a G major chord (G B D).  We can then consider the E minor 7 to be a G major with the E on the bass.
simple chords E minor 7 on guitar

Same Chord Shape

If we are going to use consider the E minor 7 chord to be a major triad with a E on the bass than it is easy to play the chord progression Em7 – A as the chord G will have the same shape as the A major. This is one of the example I am playing. Notice how the top three strings share the same chord shape.

Good luck guys!

The Chord Progression

This simple fingerstyle melody is in G major key.

The chord progression goes as follows: G – Em – C – G/B – Am – G – D – Cadd9 for the first section. The second section will have Em – D – Am – Em – C – D – Em.

The chords are just a reference guys as we will only play the melody with the bass note of the chord and not the full chord.

The Plucking

One of the most important thing about fingerstyle technique is the the achieving a good tone.

In this lesson I am going to show you the 45 degree angle rule which is probably the most important aspect you’ll have to develop.

  • Position the thumb in front of the fingers.
  • Pluck the strings with the index, middle and ring using a 45 degree angle.

Pluck with the Thumb | Pop in C

Hey guys, there is a new lesson available for the Technique Lab.

In this fingerstyle lesson I am going to show you how to improve the thumb movement with this simple yet fun to play melody.

I called it “Pop in C” due to its rhythm.

This lesson should help you improve your thumb position as well as finger dexterity and overall plucking hand balance.

About the Exercise

Key: C major

Technique: Thumb movement

Fingerstyle pattern: Combination of single plucking with the thumb as well as i-m-a plucking.

Sections: Eight bars with one section only.

How to Practice: The thumb position is one of the most important aspect of fingerstyle guitar. It is indeed really important that you approach this exercise with the right frame of mind so that you can have fun playing it and at the same time improve your playing.

Make sure you position the thumb correctly and follow the three rules as explained below.

  • Keep the thumb in front of the fingers.
  • Pluck with the side of the thumb so that you can achieve a beautiful tone.
  • If you have nails, use a combination of flesh and nails.
  • Don’t grab and pull the string.

Good luck with this super exercise guys!

Melodic Chord with Four Different Voicings

Fingerstyle Guitar

Hey guys, I hope you are having a fantastic day, today I want to show you how you can create beautiful sounding melodic chords that have four different voicings.

This fingerstyle guitar lesson shows you how to finally create chords that sound different without necessarily have to play new shapes or more difficult chords.

Each chord we are learning will have four different voicings!

I am going to show you this example in the key of G major but you can apply this concept to any chord or key.

About this lesson

Key: G major

Technique: Chords with different voicings

Plucking pattern: P i m a

Level: Beginner and intermediate

How to Practice: This fingerstyle lesson is perfect for beginners who want to learn new melodic chords. If you know how to play basic chords in G major such as G, D, C and E minor you should be able to benefit from this lesson. However, some of the chords I am about to show you can be stretchy. If you just started playing guitar, I suggest you take things step by step and learn one chord at a time.

Each chord will have four different voicings which will change the name of the chord. If you want to know more about chords, extensions and music theory behind the chords I suggest you do a little bit of research while practicing this lesson.

The Chord Progression

In this guitar lesson we are going to work on a super simple chord progression in G major: G – Em – C – D.

Each chord will be played using four different voicings. This way of playing makes the chords really melodic hence the name“melodic chords”.

The G major chord

The first chord you will learn is the G major chord. In this lesson you will play a G, G6, Gmaj7 and Gadd9 chord.

Notice that we only change one note each time. Below the notes of the chord:

  • G major: G – B – D
  • G6: G – E – B – D
  • Gmaj7: G – B – D – F#
  • Gadd9: G – A – B – D

 The Em minor chord

We will start with an Em7 then Em, Em9 and Em7/9.

The E minor is one of the most beautiful chords on guitar and there are a ton of different possibilities and variations.

I find the Em7/9 to be one of my favourite chord you can play on guitar!

Let’s break down the chords:

  • Em7: E – G – B – D
  • Em: E – G – B
  • Em9: E – F# – G – B
  • Em7/9: E – F# – G – D

The C major chord

This is another beautiful chord to expand! We are going to begin with a Cadd9 then Cadd9#11 and Cmaj7/9.

This melodic chord can be quite stretchy so really take it step by step and learn one shape at a time.

  • Cadd9: C – D – E – G
  • Cadd9#11: C – D – E – F# – G
  • Cmaj7/9: C – D – E – G – B

The D major Chord

Another great chord to work on. The D chord is a beautiful sounding chord easy to play. In this example we will learn how to play a Dsus4, D and Dadd9.

Notice that the same Dadd9 will have different shape due to the different voicing.

  • Dsus4: D – G – A
  • D: D – F# – A
  • Dadd9: D – E – F# – A

Add Extensions to Chords

Extended Chords on Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar

Hey guys, welcome to another guitar lesson!

Today I am going to show you how to add extensions to chords. Extended chords are one of the most awesome things to play on guitar and with a little effort you can play beautiful sounding extended chords too.

About this lesson

Key: A minor

Technique: Extended chords on fingerstyle acoustic guitar.

Plucking Pattern: We are not playing any particular plucking pattern for this lesson.

Level: For intermediate guitar players.

How to practice: We are going to play extended chords in A minor key. The chord progression goes as follows: Am – F – C – G. There will be six different examples on extended chords over this chord progression. I highly recommend you practice one example at a time.

One of the most effective things you can do to learn the chords I am about to show you is to put them into practice. Learn one or two then apply the chords on songs you already know. That will speed up the process of learning and memorizing the chords.

Good luck

Basic Chords

Guitar players talk a lot about basic chords. Beginners love basic chords as they are fun to play and easy to memorize.

But what exactly is a basic chord?

A basic chord is the most simple chord we find in music. It can also be called triad. Triads comes from the scale and if you are a beginner chances are that the basic chords (triads) you play all comes from the Major scale.

There is a very simple system you can use to create triads. Let’s do it in three steps!

  1. Write down the major scale. We will use the C major scale but it can be done with any major scale.
  2. Select the 1st, 3rd and 5th note starting on each note of the scale.
  3. Play the three notes together.

In the example below I am going to show you how this is done!

Don’t forget to do the same thing starting on the note D, E, F etc.

Extensions

Once you figure out how to create basic chords, you can then add extensions and learn extended chords.

A chord extensions is an additional note that can be added to the chord. We can group them into 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th. Each on of these extensions has a unique, characteristic sound that you must learn to recognize.

You can add the additional note to the triads. Check the example below.

Technique Lab Program – Module 3/8

Plucking with the Ring Finger

Hey guys, I just posted a new lesson for the Technique Lab Program Module 3/8.

In this lesson we are going to be plucking with the ring finger for the first time. The exercise is very simple and straightforward with just few chords and a very simple melody.

As always, take things step by step and spend a reasonable amount of time on this exercise before moving on to the next one.

About the Exercise

Key: A minor

Technique: Fingerstyle arpeggio plucking with the ring finger.

Fingerstyle pattern: There are three different plucking pattern in this exercise. The first one is P-a-m-i repeated twice, then P-i-m-a one time and alternate m-i for the four note melody.

Sections: The exercise is very simple with only seven bars and few chords.

Level: For beginners.

How to practice: One of the most important thing you want to develop with this exercise is the balance between thumb and plucking fingers. There are three things you must follow in order to benefit from this exercise:

  • With the fingers, pluck the strings with a 45 degree angle. With the thumb always pluck with the side of the fingers. By using a 45 degree angle you will achieve a better control and tone.
  • Articulation is everything. Use a wide movement to pluck the strings and don’t be afraid of “moving too much”. By using a wide articulation (explained in the video) you will develop a solid control. Don’t be extreme. Follow the video to learn how to pluck the strings with articulation.
  • Switch between pattern fluently and without pausing. This is a mistake beginners run into quite a lot. Play as evenly as possible and use a metronome if you need.
