Why Is This Song So Beautiful? … Asturias

Why Is This Song So Beautiful? … Asturias

Sep 6, 2020

Hey guys, in this video, we will talk about one of the popular classical guitar pieces.

This piece is called Asturias by Isaac Albeniz, a Spanish composer born in 1892.

Asturias was initially written for piano, and it was in G minor key. It was then transcribed for classical guitar in E minor. Segovia did one of the most popular transcriptions.

It was never meant to be played on the guitar, so maybe that’s why some of these sections are so difficult to play.

In this lesson, we will analyze the first section of the song. We will learn the melody, accompaniment, rhythm, fingerpicking pattern, and the great strummed chords.

The Most Simple PERCUSSIVE GUITAR Technique for Beginners.

The Most Simple PERCUSSIVE GUITAR Technique for Beginners.

Jul 25, 2020

The thumb-slap is one of the most popular, intuitive, and fun guitar techniques for beginners and advanced guitar players.

This technique allows you to add a percussive slap to a chord progression.

It’s called thumb-slap because we slap one of the bottom strings with the side of the thumb. The noise is produced by the string hitting the fret wires close to the body of the guitar.

Usually, the thumb-slap technique is performed on the E, A, and D string. Why? Because it is done with the thumb, which is the finger that usually plays the bass note of a chord. It is also done on the same string as the bass note of the chord.

If the chord you are playing has the bass on the low E string, you will perform the thumb-slap on the low E string. You will do the same with the chords that have the bass note on the A and D string.

In this video, we will put the thumb-slap into practice and use it over a beautiful chord progression in E major.

Enjoy the lesson.

Fingerstyle Shuffle Blues … With Just One Finger!

Fingerstyle Shuffle Blues … With Just One Finger!

May 30, 2020

Strumming Blues chords with the thumb is something that I find myself doing quite a lot. One of the reasons why I like to strum the strings of the guitar with the thumb is because of the unique tone and vibe you can achieve.

In this lesson, I am going to show you how to play a shuffle Blues in 12/8, entirely played with the right-hand thumb.

We will start by learning the simple melody, and then I am going to show you how to apply the strumming technique to add rhythm and groove to the Blues.

Enjoy this lesson.

12 Emotional Fingerstyle Melodies on Guitar … easy to play

12 Emotional Fingerstyle Melodies on Guitar … easy to play

Mar 13, 2020

Hey guys, in this video, I am going to show you a bunch of beautiful and emotional fingerstyle melodies on the guitar. The goal is to create simple and slow melodies that can be easily played on the guitar.

Now, emotional doesn’t necessarily mean that the melody should be played in a minor key. You can make a melody sounds emotional in both major and minor keys.

So, what are the elements that can make a melody sounds emotional?

First of all, let’s define emotional. Feeling such as sorrow and sadness can be linked to an emotional feeling. We can use minor keys to express such feelings.

Also, happiness, relief, joy, and hope can be considered to be emotional stated. For these, I like to use major chord progressions.

I hope you enjoy this video!

Beautiful Yet Simple Chords on Ukulele

Beautiful Yet Simple Chords on Ukulele

Mar 9, 2020

Finally! In this ukulele (OMG, it sounds so weird hehe), I am going to show you how to play a beautiful chord progression on the ukulele.

I bought this uke a few weeks ago, and this is the very first lesson I am posting on my channel. I feel like I want to share my journey with you switching between guitar and uke.

The ukulele is an insanely beautiful instrument that feels completely different than the guitar and inspires you differently.

In this chord progression, we will learn how to play a chord progression in F major. As always, we will keep things musical so that you can understand the chords but also hear how they sound in “real life.”

IMPORTANT: The chords I teach during the tutorial are slightly different than the ones played at the beginning of the video (I messed up); therefore, there will be two tabs. One for the music video and one for the guitar tutorial.

This is Why I Love Natural Harmonics

This is Why I Love Natural Harmonics

Mar 5, 2020

There are a lot of different guitar techniques that we can use to bring our emotions into music. One, in particular, is used to create a beautiful bell-like tone that is unique and sophisticated.

These types of notes are called Harmonics, and when played with open strings, they can be called Natural Harmonics.

We can achieve such a beautiful tone by touching the string on specific frets. The three most common are the XII, VII, and V, which are the ones we will use in this guitar lesson.

So, what’s a natural harmonic? Well, when the string vibrates, it produces a note. Our ears can hear the fundamental frequency of that note. However, the note that we perceive is also colored by other frequencies called “Overtones.”

The Harmonic allows you to isolate certain overtones of a guitar string, giving you this whistle-like tone that is higher in pitch as we move down the fretboard.

In this lesson, I am going to show you how to play a beautiful melody with natural harmonics.

Enjoy!

How I Write Music When I Have ZERO Inspiration

How I Write Music When I Have ZERO Inspiration

Dec 31, 2019

Let’s face it, guys! Ideas don’t just blow up inside your brain every single minute of the day. There are moments where you have to write music, but you feel uninspired!

So, where do you go when you need to find the initial idea for your music. In this guitar lesson, I am going to show you the system that I use all the time to get started with a musical idea when I have zero inspiration.

I call it “Rational songwriting!” and as for any other thing we learn on this channel, it starts by simplifying things as much as possible.

Now, music is a combination of three elements: Melody, Harmony, and Rhythm.

In the example I played at the beginning of the video, I combined these three elements in the most simple way possible.

So, the melody was just a D major scale. The Harmony, just a bass note. And the rhythm only a simple percussive pattern.

Once we simplify each element, writing, songwriting, and even just noodling around with a musical idea becomes easier. Once we have the initial idea for our song, we can then use our skills, technique, and knowledge to add more elements to the song.

We can build different levels of songwriting, and in this lesson, I am going to show you the one that I like to use to get started.

Good luck!

These Emotional Chords Will Blow Your Mind

These Emotional Chords Will Blow Your Mind

Nov 10, 2019

Hey guys, welcome to another lesson. Today, I am going to talk to you about how to make chords sound more emotional and dark by playing them on the lower end of the guitar.

I learned these types of chords a long time ago when I was playing with a singer. She didn’t want me to play chords that sounded too “tiny” and high pitched. It made total sense. It can be confusing for a singer to sing over chords that have the same voicing range as the singing part.

I had to find a way to lower the chord range so that my chord voicing wouldn’t clash with the singing part. I stumbled upon the inverted triads that I am about to show you in this video, and I have been using them since then.

In this video, I am going to break down each triad so that you can learn the chord shape but also which notes I am playing.

For some of the chords, the root note isn’t necessarily played on the bass. Some of the chords are played with the 3rd or 5th on the bass.

Take things step-by-step and learn one chord at a time.

Good luck!

This Emotional MELODY Works Like MAGIC

This Emotional MELODY Works Like MAGIC

Aug 31, 2019

Hey guys, today I am going to show you how to play this beautiful and emotional melody on the guitar. Also, I am going to share with you the musical elements that I use to take these chords to the next level.

We can break down this lesson into three different sections:

  • The intro played with the Am9 and G major chord.
  • The melody played in 6th with the Am, G, Am, and E minor chord.
  • A more challenging melody played with the F, G, Am, and Em chord.

We will also take a look at some of the techniques I use to create more dynamics, tone range, and colors. You must learn these techniques, so your music becomes more colorful and unique.

Don’t just focus on playing the right notes!

Magical Chords on Guitar

Magical Chords on Guitar

Jun 28, 2019

Hey guys, let me show you how to play this magical chord progression on fingerstyle guitar. Today I am going to teach you a simple chord progression played in different ways.

We are going to use simple triads and inversions to create a beautiful chord progression that features different layers and dynamics.

A triad is the most simple chord we have in music. It is built with the Root note, 3rd, and 5th of the chord. Triads are extremely versatile. As you will learn in this lesson, we can use triads to create a simple intro that sounds beautiful and “different.”

The chord progression is in B minor. If you are familiar with this key, you’ll probably know that we are going to use chords such as B minor, D major, G major, and A major.

Everything is played entirely with the fingerpicking technique.

Enjoy this lesson.
