Super Sad Melody in G major for Beginners

Fingerstyle Guitar Lesson

Can a sad melody be in major key?

I was reading a cool article about the connection between music and emotions and I wasn’t surprised to read that sad, emotional melodies are written in minor key.

It makes sense and I do agree with the writer. The minor key is dark, sad, pessimistic, melancholic, dramatic and unpleasant and there is a reason for that which we are not going to discuss here (at least not in this post).

The question is “Can I make a melody in major key sound sad?”

I think so! And I have been challenging myself trying to write one.

In this fingerstyle guitar lesson I am going to show you a sad melody in G major key.

Because we are playing in a major key, we have to work twice as hard to make this melody super sad. We don’t have the minor cadences to help us and we also don’t have a minor melody.

In order to win this challenge we will have to rely on other things such as: Expression, over-ringing and (not priority) few guitar effects.

  • Expression: This is the most important aspect you’ll have to develop. A sad melody needs to express a negative, melancholic mood. We can give this moon to any melody regardless if its a major or minor melody. Pluck the strings gently, play the bass note before the melody, use “tempo rubato” ( an expressive and rhythmic freedom in tempo).
  • Over-ringing: Make sure the melody resonate beautifully. Hold the notes and let me melody ring out nicely. The over-ringing technique can make everything you play sound more melancholic and calm.
  • Guitar effects: I use a lot of reverb and delay to sustain the notes.

This is an awesome guitar lesson that I am sure many of you are going to like.

As always take it step by step and only more on to the next part when you feel ready.

Let’s get started.

The Video

The Chord Progression

In the first part of the video I am going to show you the chord progression I used to write this sad melody.

We are in the key of G major and the chord progression goes as follows: G – D – Em – Cadd9. We will repeat that twice than C – D – Em – D for the B section.

Notice that the chord progression is very “Major” sounding.

The G major key is one of the most used on guitar. It’s simple, nice sounding and fingerstyle friendly.

Fingerstyle Approach

We are playing this sad melody using fingerstyle technique. This guitar approach is unique and allows you to pluck the strings directly with your fingernails or fingertip as opposed to plucking the strings with a guitar pick.  This guitar technique is amazing because allows you to combine chords and melody together.

For this guitar lesson you will play the bass note with the thumb and the melody with alternate fingering middle and index finger (m-i).

It is of paramount importance that you learn how to pluck the strings correctly.

With the fingerstyle technique the sound comes from your fingers so plucking the string incorrectly will certainly give you a sloppy sound. Spend time plucking the strings using different angles. The tone will change drastically so you’ll have to memorize the which part of the fingertip gives you the sound you are looking for.

Use this sad melody to improve your fingerstyle technique before trying a different lesson.

Good luck.

Chords that Sing an Emotional Beautiful Melody!

Only Possible in E major

Amazing things happen when we play in the key of  E major. Don’t ask me why but I have the felling everything in E major sounds amazing, emotional and beautiful.

You don’t believe me? Wait until I show you these amazing chords that sing an emotional beautiful melody.

If you have been playing guitar for a while you know that there is a big difference between chords and melody. A chord is a bunch on notes played together, a melody is a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying.

In this lesson though I am going to show you how you can make your chords sing an emotional beautiful melody.

This is possible for two reasons:

  1. The chords we are playing only have two notes. The root note and the major or minor 3rd. These type of chords are among the most amazing and beautiful sounding chords I know because they sound super melodic.
  2. We are playing in E major key, which gives you unique melodic possibilities. One of the amazing thing about playing in E major is that we can add open strings such as the E and B string to each chord we play to add more color to the chord. Only possible in E major guys.

In this fingerstyle guitar lesson you will learn four beautiful melody that will inspire you!

I hope you enjoy this lesson guys. I ha a ton of fun recording it!

Let’s get started.

The Video

The Chord Shape

The unique thing about this guitar lesson is that you will be learning only two simple chord shape that we transpose up and down the neck.

This approach is great because instead of trying to learn a lot of chords, you will be focusing on just two shapes.

Here’s the chord shape.

Chord shape in E major key

The E major Chords

You can use these two shape to create a beautiful melody in E major.

The chords you will be able to play using this chord shape are: E major, F#minor, G#minor. A major. B major, C#minor and D#minor (if you play the triad this chord will be a diminished chord but in this example we only play the root note and minor 3rd so it’s Ok to call this chord minor).

The next step will be to learn the E major scale on the 4th string and then play the relative shape on each degree of the chord.

Change set of Strings

You can also use this chord shape on a different set of string and still have the same major and minor chord.

Fingerstyle Rumba for Beginners

Easy Chords in A minor

Hey guys I hope you are having a fantastic weekend and you finally got time to practice some guitar stuff.

Today I am going to show you a very useful exercise I called “Fingerstyle Rumba” that will help you improve your plucking speed, control and musicality. Also, you will learn an awesome chord progression in  A minor that sounds super Spanish.

The goal is to use this chord progression as well as the rumba rhythm to create a beautiful sounding melody mixed with chords.

There are two things that you will need to focus on when practicing this exercise.

  1. The melody is actually played with the thumb. This is kind of unusual as we usually play the melody with the fingers. It will take a while for you to master this approach so take it step by step.
  2. The fingerstyle rumba rhythm follows a repetitive patterns. Familiarize yourself with the 123 123 12 rhythmic pattern using on chord only. The 1 is always played with the thumb, the 2 with the middle finger and the 3 with the index finger.

I really love the Spanish Rumba and I believe that practicing this fingerstyle rhythmic pattern will help you improve your fingerstyle technique a lot.

As always guys, take things step by step. I recommend you start by learning the chord progression first then learn the melody played with the thumb before learning the full pattern.

Enjoy this lesson and have a super weekend.

Basic Guitar Chords with Cool Sounding Voicing

Beginner Friendly

One of the question you guys ask the most is: ” When can I play different fingerstyle guitar chords for beginners? I am fed up of playing the same basic guitar chords all the time.

The answer is, “Now”

The thing that most beginners don’t know is that basic guitar chord can easily become “Amazing basic chords” all you need is just a couple of extra notes and playing using finger-picking technique.

In this guitar lesson I am going to show you an awesome and easy way to simply spice up chords. We will be playing basic chords such as G major, C major and E minor but you’ll see how different they sound.

The goal is to familiarize yourself with basic guitar chords played using different voicing.

I don’t know the exact definition of voicing in music but in my world the voicing is the highest note of the chord. The “Vocal note” or the note that “Sings”.

We can change the voicing of a chord to create a different sounding melody and make the chords more interesting and less static.

The awesome thing about voicing is that we can also change the voicing within the chord (and not only the highest note) in order to create different sounding chords.

Today I am going to show you how to transform basic guitar chords by changing some of their voicing.

We are playing in G major, one of the most friendly key for beginners and the chords we are about to transform are among the easiest chords you can play on guitar.

Overall this is a very creative fingerstyle guitar lessons for the guitar players who’s tired of playing the same static basic chords.

Enjoy this lesson guys.

The Video

The Chord Progression

We will be working on a simple chord progression in G major: G – C – Em – D

There are two things that you must follow in order to perform this exercise correctly.

  • The chords must be playing using the plucking technique. Plucking the strings with your fingers allows you to select which string you need to play so that you can emphasize the different voicing.
  • The bass note (root note of the chord) needs to ring out as you change the voicing. Make sure that changing the voicing doesn’t make the chord sound sloppy.

This exercise can be really challenging for certain beginners especially if you haven’t been playing guitar for long or if your fingers are not stretchy yet.

As always, take things step by step and play around with one chord only if you have to. Trying to play the entire chord progression is productive only if your technique is developed enough to play basic chords.

If you just unboxed your guitar, maybe it is better if you come back when you feel ready, but keep this lesson handy! I am sure you are going to love these chords.

Four Melodies in D minor over Melodic Backing Track

Four Melodies in D minor over Melodic Backing Track

Four Melodies in D minor

Over Melodic Backing Track

What a hot day in Manila! One of the good thing about living in the Philippines is that you never feel cold.

Today I am sharing a super guitar lesson guys! I am going to challenge you in a different way. We are going to have fun but you have to be willing to try something new.

I know, sometimes new things can be scary but you never gonna get to the next level unless you try new things!

In this lesson I am going to show you four melodies in D minor over a melodic backing track.

I am pretty sure you are familiar with playing melodies and if you have been following me for a while chances are that you learned some of the melodies I teach inside my programs.

But today, we will add a new element that will change the way we approach a melody, a backing track.

A backing track is an audio track with a looped chord progression that goes on for minutes. It’s just chords and it can be used to improvise or write melodies.

We will be using a backing track in D minor and I am going to show you four different melodies in D minor you can play along with the track.

The awesome thing about using a backing track is that you don’t have to worry about playing chords, in fact we will only play single notes however, there are guitar players who struggle playing along with backing track. Here’s why:

  • Struggle keeping up with the rhythm.
  • They can’t figure out where the melody starts.
  • Timing isn’t good.
  • The backing track is actually a distraction.

If this is the first time you are playing along with a backing track I recommend listening to the beginning of the video several times so that you can familiarize yourself with the melody. Then slowly learn the phrase before playing along with the track.

You can get access to the full tab and the backing track on my Patreon page. Become a Patron and access a ton of lessons and programs for as little as $15. Here a full list of my Patreon lessons currently available.

Now grab your guitar and let’s get started.

The Backing Track

Chord Progression

So how are we going to play these melodies in D minor?

We will be using a melodic backing track. The chord progression is very simple and I’ve already recorded a video where I show you how to play the chords.

The chord progression is: D minor, Bb major, C major and A minor

You can watch the guitar lesson here!

The D minor Scale

The melodies in D minor that you are about to learn today are based on the D minor scale.

We will use one position only so it should be easy for you to learn the melodies.

Most Common Fingerstyle Arpeggio

with Beautiful Chord Progression!

Hey guys, welcome to another super fingerstyle guitar lesson. I hope you are having a fantastic day and you are planning to practice your guitar things!

Today I want to show you what I think it is the most common simple fingerstyle arpeggio on guitar. This is the one of the first fingerstyle arpeggio I learned when I first started playing guitar.

I was 10 years old and one of the first exercise my guitar teacher gave me had this arpeggio! Don’t ask which exercise though, I really can’t remember.

There are two awesome things you will learn in this lesson.

  • A simple fingerstyle arpeggio that you can use almost on any chord progression. This plucking pattern will also help you improve your fluidity and finger dexterity.
  • A beautiful chord progression in D minor which we are going to learn in three different ways. The chord progression is very simple and beautiful. I am sure you are going to like it.

You are lucky! The most common fingerstyle arpeggio on guitar is also one of the most simple however there are few things that might challenge you depending on your level.

Let me tell you the two most challenging things you will find in this lesson.

  1. We will be using all the plucking fingers from thumb to ring finger. Some of you probably never used the ring finger before.
  2. It’s hard to play the pattern as evenly as possible. If you are planning to practice without metronome, record your performance to check if your timing is even.

As always take things step by step and learn one chord at a time. Spend time practicing the plucking pattern and don’t get bored! It takes time but the reword is priceless.

Grab your guitar and let’s get started.

The Video

The Fingerstyle Arpeggio

The fingerstyle arpeggio is probably the first thing you want to start practicing.

There are different ways to practice a new plucking pattern but I find that the most effective ways is by focusing on the plucking hand only.

Mute the strings and start plucking the strings following the pattern. This common plucking pattern has been used on a ton of songs so you could already be familiar with it.

This is the guitar tab. You can get the full tab on my Patreon page.

The Chord Progression

We will be working on a beautiful chord progression in D minor.

The awesome thing about this exercise is that I am going to show you three different ways of playing this chord progression so that you can keep challenging yourself.

The chords are: D minor, Bb major,  C major and A minor chord.

Each chord progression will add different extensions.

How to Play Blues Solo with only One Riff Without Sounding Boring!

How to Play Blues Solo with only One Riff Without Sounding Boring!

How to Play Blues with only One Riff

Without Sounding Boring!

The Blues is one of the most amazing, simple, fun to play style of music on Earth. I am not a blues man but I love blues a lot.

One of the reason why I love Blues so much is that you can say so many things with just few notes. You can play a blues solo with just few notes and still make an impact on your audience.

Blues is about rhythm, intensity, tone, simplicity and dynamics. It will take time before you acquire all these unique characteristic but you are more likely to succeed if you have a system in place to help you with that.

One of the first thing you can work on it’s “Simplicity”. Blues is a very simple music style with a simple structure and today we will focus on getting the structure and simple blues solo ideas in place so that you can start familiarizing with it.

In this fingerstyle guitar lesson, I am going to show you how to play a blues with only one riff (you can also call it phrase/melody) without sounding boring.

I am assuming you know a little bit about the blues structure, if you don’t, don’t worry I will tell you more about it in this post.

The goal is to be able to play a blues solo with just few notes repeated throughout the entire structure.

I am going to give you a very simple formula to spice up the riff at the end of each line so that you don’t have the feeling of playing the same phrase over and over again.

Overall guys, this is an awesome lesson if you are looking to improve your musicality, rhythmic skills and become a better blues player.

One thing really important though! It is really difficult to make this concept easy in just one video and I am sure you’ll have a lot of questions after this video. It’s easy to think about what to do next before you even finish the material I show you in this video. Don’t rush and stick with the stuff I show you in this video for a while before moving on to more complex concepts.

Blues is awesome but the most common mistake guitar players make is to try to learn too many things too fast.

Keep it simple and take it step by step.

Time to go! Let’s get started.

The Video

The Blues Structure

Twelve Bar Blues

One of the first thing you will have to get familiar with is the Blues structure.

In this video we will be working on the twelve bar blues which is probably the most popular (probably the only one) blues structure you will even have to learn.

It goes as follows:

Twelve Bar Blues Structure with Dominant 7 vhords

The Dominat 7 Blues Chord

Blues has his own chord, the Dominant 7 chord.

These type of chords sound super bluesy and they are the most important aspect of playing blues. You can’t be bluesy if the chords don’t sound bluesy!

Here you will learn the most simple dominant 7th chord you can play on guitar. You can check it out on the diagram above.

Dominant 7 chords on fingerstyle acouustic guitar good

The Blues Scale

Minor Pentatonic

The third element that is vital to make your blues solo awesome is the Pantatonic scale.

The majority of guitar players know this scale (I started improvising using it when I was a little kid).

In this lesson, we will learn just two positions of the A minor Pentatonic scale so that is easy for you to learn the riffs.

Here’s the diagram.

Six Melodies in A minor that Sound Awesome on Acoustic Guitar

Six Melodies in A minor that Sound Awesome on Acoustic Guitar

Six Melodies in A minor

that Sound Awesome on Acoustic Guitar

Hey guys, today I had a ton of fun recording this video so I am super happy to share it with you!

There are days where I feel like playing something without necessarily have to “transform it” into a guitar lesson even though, as you will see in this video, I always break it down so that you can learn something out of it.

In this video I am going to play six melodies in A minor that really sound awesome on acoustic guitar. I am using a backing track I have recorded so that can improvise and solo before deciding which are the melodies I like the most.

Writing melodies on acoustic guitar is one of the most enjoyable task for such “melodies” addict like me. Even when I improvise, I like to make it melodic.

Writing and playing a solo in fingerstyle is something you must try!

The amazing thing about fingerstyle is that you can really personalize the tone, intensity and dynamic of each note you play. Try to learn a simple melody and pluck the strings in different positions to change the tone.

In this video, I like to play the six melodies in A minor with my fingers (rather than a guitar pick) so I can really decide which type of tone I want for each phrase.

Speed isn’t important for me. In fact, I like to play slowly and I focus much more on the shape and contour of each melody rather than the speed or number of notes I play.

If you want to learn the six melodies in A minor I am playing in this video, make sure you get the tab and backing track on my Patreon page so you can play along with the music.

Enjoy this video guys.

Super Easy Pentatonic Melody in A major for Beginners

Super Easy Pentatonic Melody in A major for Beginners

Super Easy Pentatonic Melody in A major

For Beginners

Hey guys, Marco here!

Today I want to share with you this super easy Pentatonic melody in A major I wrote specifically for beginners.

The Pentatonic is one of the most used scale in music and guitar players (as well as any other musician) use it to improvise, solo and write music.

In this fingerstyle guitar lesson I want to focus on the A major pentatonic, which I think sounds awesome! This easy Pentatonic melody you are about to learn is pretty catchy and musical and it is entirely played using the A major pentatonic scale.

There are two things that you really want to focus on when practicing this melody:

  • Play the melody as evenly as possible. We are playing a 12/8 time signature shuffle rhythm. The easiest way to think about the 12/8 is by counting 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 (rather than the usual 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4).
  • If you can, sing the melody while playing it. It will help you memorize the sound of the Pentatonic scale!

There is also a technical challenge that some of you will probably face when learning this pentatonic melody.

The Pentatonic is a five notes scale. The A major pentatonic scale has the following notes: A B C# E F# A. As you probably noticed, the D and G# are missing from the scale.

This unique characteristic makes the Pentatonic scale quite stretchy and difficult to play for some beginners.

Make sure you take things step by step and learn the stretchy part slowly.

I hope you get inspired guys!

Let’s get started.

The Pentatonic Scale

One of the most amazing thing about the Pentatonic scale is that is a very simple scale to memorize.

In this guitar lesson we will learn the A major scale and use it to create a beautiful, musical melody perfect for beginners guitar players.

I recommend you learn the A Pentatonic in different position but in this example I am going to show you what I think is the easiest major pentatonic shape in A major.

Horizontal Chords

From Simple Bass Note to Complex Chords

Hey, guys, welcome back to another super fingerstyle guitar lesson.

Today I want to talk to you about the difference between playing chords vertically vs. horizontally and highlight the benefits of learning horizontal guitar chord progression.

Almost every guitar player starts by learning chords vertically in one position of the neck.

Think about all the basic chords you know within the first three frets of the guitar neck. I am sure the majority of you can play at least 15 chords in that tiny little space. I call these types of chords, “Vertical chords.”

They are critical, and every guitar player should know them perfectly. However, there is more!

There is another awesome way of playing chords, which I call “Horizontal Chords.” In this guitar lesson, we will learn how to play a chord progression horizontally up and down the guitar neck.

This guitar approach is much more challenging but also extremely fun and fulfilling.

We will be working on five different ways of playing the same chord progression, from a simple bass line to complex chords.

The goal is to really familiarize yourself with horizontal chords and challenge your guitar skills by playing chords that are more challenging and less intuitive than basic vertical chords.

Take things to step by step.

Let’s get started.

The Video

The Chord Progression

Let’s quickly learn the chord progression in C major.

If you have always played vertical chords, you will probably think that this lesson is out of your league.

Make sure you try to learn chords, no matter how hard it looks. You need to challenge yourself if you want to become a better guitar player.

The chord progression goes like this: C – G/B – Am – G – F – Em – F – G – C

Spend enough time on each of the five variations. You will learn:

  • Simple bass note
  • Bass note and additional note
  • Different plucking pattern
  • Full chords
  • Chords and melody

Good luck!
