STEP 1. UNDERSTAND THE TECHNIQUE
In this lesson, we will learn how to pluck the strings correctly.
- Learn the difference between plucking the strings with fingertips vs. fingernails.
- How to position the thumb while performing the alternate fingering technique.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW.
The plucking fingers are indicated with the letters P i m a. The letters are found on the left side of the note.
- P for police (thumb).
- i for indice (index).
- m for medio (middle).
- a for anulare (ring).
STEP 1. PRACTICING SCALES
In this lesson, I will show you how to practice the alternate fingering technique using the C major scale.
You can practice the scale with two plucking movements:
- i-m.
- m-i.
The C major scale is made up of seven notes: C D E F G A B C.
You will learn:
- The C major scale with just five notes: C D E F G A.
- The C major scale with seven notes: C D E F G A B C.
- The C major scale over two octaves: C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C.
LEFT-HAND POSITION
We use numbers to indicate the left-hand fingers.
- Number 1 for the index finger.
- Number 2 for the middle finger.
- Number 3 for the ring finger.
- Number 4 for the little finger.
When practicing scales, is essential to use the correct left-hand fingering. I always recommend assigning a finger to each fret (check the video for details).

STEP 1. SONG 1. MINOR MOOD
Let’s use the alternate fingering technique to play a lovely classical melody.
A few things you should know:
- This melody is in the key of A minor.
- It is constructed with the notes of the A minor scale.
- It is entirely played with the alternate fingering technique.
- The bass note of the chords can be easily added to this melody.
Let the notes of the melody ring out as much as possible.
TECHNIQUE TIPS
- Rest the right-hand thumb on one of the strings.

In this lesson, we will take a look at two awesome techniques:
- The “Singled Bass.”
- The “Light Strumming.”
First of all, let me tell you that I love this melody a lot. It has a lovely emotional feel that is unique and amazing.
Of course, playing the right notes alone isn’t enough. In fact, I will show you two simple techniques that will allow you to add much more color and feel to the music.
THE SINGLED BASS TECHNIQUE
Play the bass note of the chord before the melody. This approach allows you to emphasize and give more character to the melody.
THE LIGHT STRUMMING TECHNIQUE
Strum the strings lightly with the left side of the thumb for a smooth and melodic strum.
