The Hybrid Picking is a Right Hand Technique achieved by playing with both Fingers and Pick at the same time. Usually we hold the pick between the Thumb and Index Finger while the Middle and Ring finger are hanging close to the strings. With the Hybrid Picking we will be using the Middle and Ring Finger to.

This technique can be used on both Electric and Acoustic Guitar (or Classical Maybe) and can be applied either on Arpeggios or Solos. That means you can use the Hybrid Picking to reduce the movement of the Pick when you arpeggiate a chord or minimize the picking when you play single notes. Let me show you an Example of both:

Picking and Hybrid Picking on Arpeggio

The first arpeggio has been played with the common Alternate Picking. The second example shows the same arpeggio played with Hybrid Picking. It might take a while to get use to this technique. Play the exercise really slow. The first ting you will notice is the lack of Accuracy and Timing. Don’t give up and keep trying really slow.

This is an example of Hybrid Picking on a Solo

Hybrid Picking on Lead Guitar

In this example we are using the Hybrid Picking on a C minor Pentatonic Scale. This lick is quite tricky but is a good way to show you the efficiency and accuracy of the Hybrid Picking on Single notes. Let me just explain to you all the little symbols below the Tab

  • The little “hat” symbol means Down-Stroke
  • The “H” means Hammer On Technique
  • The “P” means Pull Off Technique
  • The “m” means middle finger right hand

Now let’s start learning this technique from the fundamentals. If you have never used the Hybrid Picking before, make sure you start from stage 1.
