Let’s learn some Blues Chords. Now, I don’t think we have Blues Chords in music. I mean, you will never hear someone say “Can you play Bb blues chord please”. So don’t get confuse. But we do have Bluesy chords and Blues Chord Progression. By Bluesy chords I mean chords that have a strong and defined Blues Sound. There many different chords that can be used in a Blues as well as different Chord Progression. In this page I will show you two different easy chords that I have learned when I first started playing Electric Guitar, these are:

  • A7 with no 5th
  • D7 with no 5th
  • A7/13
  • D7/9

To me these chords are the Essence of the Blues Chords. You will probably have a different opinion. For example if you come from a Rock-Blues background, the power chord is the one on the top of the list (think of Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy and BB King). Check out the Chord Diagrams below and keep up with all the other Blues lessons !!!

Blues Chords for Guitar

Let’s get into details!!!

  • A7 with no 5th: This chord has the Root note on the 6th String 5th fret. As you can see from the Diagrams, we are only using three notes. The Root, the 7th (4th string) and the 3rd (3rd String).
  • D7 with no 5th: This chord has the Root note on the 5th string. Again, we only have the Root, 3rd (4th string) and 7th (3rd String)
  • A7/13: I love this chord. The 13th (2nd string) gives a much more open jazzy sound. You can alternate this chord with the A7 and change voicing …
  • D7/9: This is a must know chord if you play Blues and Funk. Easy to remember and super effective!!!
